Description
Main constituents:
- Phyllocladiums (Cladioliums): Abundant in mucilage.
- Flowers: Contain flavonoids (opuntia flavonoside) and mucilage.
- Fruits: Contain pectin, tannins, vitamin C, carotenoids and β-xanthins.
Pharmacological Action: Phyllocladiums, due to their mucilage content, are used as demulcent and anti-inflammatory agents. Recently, preparations based on soluble fiber have appeared on the market as adjuvants in the treatment of overweight, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia. The pulp of phyllocladiums has several pharmaceutical actions: antioxidant, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, hypolipidemic, antiviral, cytotoxic and healing. The fruits have an astringent, antidiarrheal and vitamin action.
Properties and Traditional Uses:
- Emollients: The abundant mucilages in the cladodes make them mild and protective for mucous membranes.
- Anti-inflammatory: The mucilages in nopal cladodes possess anti-inflammatory properties, beneficial for inflammatory conditions.
- Digestive Aid: The mucilages can alleviate digestive problems such as irritation and inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.
Research and Scientific Benefits:
Nopal cladoliums have been investigated for their potential in weight management, diabetes and hyperlipidemia, mainly due to their high content of fiber and other bioactive compounds. Several clinical studies with soluble fiber extracted from phyllocladium show positive results as a dietary supplement in the treatment of metabolic syndrome: overweight, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia (associated with diet and exercise), with significant reductions in body mass index, body fat percentage and circulating triglycerides.
